Anna Freud developed a concept of normality for the adolescent period. She noted that many forms of adolescent acting out are normal and make a positive contribution to development. Did you act out during your adolescence? How did you do it? Did you skip school or run away? How did your parents react to your behavior? Was their reaction helpful or unhelpful to you? Erikson adds that some adolescents, such as Malcolm X, finding it difficult to establish a positive identity, establish a negative one. Did you go through a period of negative identity? Do you know others who did? What helped you to pass through that identity into a positive one?
