Part A: Starbucks’ Ethical Behaviour and Integrity in Achieving Success
Introduction
Ethics can be defined as the strategy or approach used by organisations to analyse and determine between correct and incorrect choice. Ethics helps in clearing the conscious of the leaders of the organisation to make the decision. Ethical decisions take the company to the next level of success. Ethical decisions help the company to survive legal issues. Nowadays, organisations used ethics as their strategy to get upper hand in competition. The organisation selected for this research essay is Starbucks.
Since 2007, Starbucks is considered one of the most ethical companies in the world. Since 1971, company has set up an example by ethically sourcing and roasting high-quality Arabica coffee (Gcrmag, 2019). The key ethical issues diversity at workplace and corporate social responsibility to be addressed and the stand of company is analysed using relevant examples. Although every multinational organisation has two to three pages of the code of conduct of ethics but not actually following it or using it in making business decision is two different things.
Key Value 1: Corporate Social Responsibility
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) can be defined as the strategy to contribute towards society, customers, employees and environment without harming the economic growth of the organisations. CSR is used by most of the multinational company to develop the goodwill. As mentioned by Unit (2015), every organisation has their own ways to complete their corporate social responsibilities. Some the initiatives taken by various organisation includes charity, sustainable development, green initiatives, and training of employees. Starbucks is no exceptions from other companies. They invested in the sustainable methods to grow crops and development of the condition of farmers (Starbucks Coffee Company, 2019).
Their approached to source the cocoa, coffee and tea come under the guidelines of the sourcing. Company has contributed its fair share towards protecting environment. They are trying to develop environmental-friendly cups and expanding hard on their recycling plan to reduce waste. They are committed to use minimum energy. The major source of their energy is renewable. They are helping farmers in mitigating the effect of climate change on coffee plantation. The materials used for making their stores are responsible for reducing carbon footprint (Starbucks Coffee Company, 2019). Company is known do their social responsibility since 1980. Starbucks’ 2016 Global Social Impact Report shares the 2020 vision of sustainable development of organisation.
They have made goals to use renewable energy, planting trees and food rescue (The New York Times, 2019). The claim made by Starbucks to conserve environment is false. Many customers have claimed that employees at various store keep the tap of water running while washing utensils constantly. The company’s claim for the eco-friendly cup and reduction of waste has not even make any marginal impact (Starbucks, 2019). Most of the store location faced both environmental and customer issues.
