Over the previous decades, the unusual involvement of people suffering from serious mental health issues within the system of criminal justice has gained attention of advocates, practitioners, academics and policy makers alike.
Passing with time the budget of health in the criminal justice system is being reduced overtime, the system of criminal justice is making certain plans for the people with serious mental health issues. One of such programs is CIT (Crisis Intervention Team). This approach is designed in order to improve the ability of the officers to intervene safely, link people with the mental health issues and help them divert themselves from the system of criminal justice when the time is appropriate.
It seems obvious that there needs to be more research in order to be declared that the crisis intervention team is a model which is "evidence based", it has however been called a "promising practice" as well as a "best practice" model for the criminal justice system.
