In the story Bartleby the Scrivener by Melville, the passive resentment against the overwork is seen through the personality of Bartleby. Gifted with the skills of a professional copyist in the story, Bartleby represents the outlook of Melville who was under the deep impression of materialistic boom through Wall Streets. The story showcases the state of passive resistance as a strong opposing force to the economical control that some people had taken as well as the philosophical concept that people with diverse professional skills can be seen working within one roof.
