The onset of materialistic philosophy is one of the major themes that authors of the 919h century put forward. In fact, the rise of Wall Street in America
is the start of this new era, an age that does not recognize boundaries at workplace. Professionals having immense possibilities of growth were welcomed during that time. However, a sort of manipulation existed in the over pressure of work laid down on them, enforcing almost no resist in their personalities. In the story Bartleby the Scrivener by Melville, the passive resentment against the overwork is seen through the personality of Bartleby. Gifted with the skills of a professional copyist in the story, Bartleby represents the outlook of Melville who was under the deep impression of materialistic boom through Wall Streets. The story showcases the state of passive resistance as a strong opposing force to the economical control that some people had taken as well as the philosophical concept that people with diverse professional skills can be seen working within one roof.
Brief Overview
    At first, it is significant to note here that Bartleby is the story of a lawyer who is experienced in dealing with the quirk professional behaviors of his employees as he has spent considerable time in the Wall Street. His employees—whose descriptions are given in the story—are mainly three, Turkey, Nippers and Ginger Nut and they altogether constitute a sort of divergent working atmosphere in his office. Turkey and Nippers are opposite to each other in terms of showing their working styles. While Turkey speeds up the work only in the morning, Nipper’s efficiency appears in the afternoon.
