An economist at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) used government data to conclude that as Americans spend more time online, they spend less time on many routine duties and tasks, that is, less time working.39 A random sample of adults ages 25–55 was obtained, and each completed a survey concerning work and leisure activities. The amount of time spent online each day (x, in hours) and the amount of time spent working each day ( y, in hours) for each are given in the following table.
