An awareness of our feelings about certain clients is essential. Counselors have an ethical responsibility to keep the relationship with the client professional and to prevent a personal relationship from developing. If you notice hesitancy on your part to terminate the client although this client has completed all of his or her counseling goals, you need to examine your reasons for delaying termination. There may be clients that we enjoy seeing and talking with and perhaps even think that they would make a good friend. To keep a client active to meet our own needs is unethical.
