Health disparities faced by Afro-American Community
The Afro-American community of the society are at higher risk of diseases like stroke, diabetes, pneumonia, asthma, cancer and HIV/AIDS. Further as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) it can be stated that these groups of people are likely to die at an ea
rly age due to various causes. Further it’s the young Afro-Americans who are infected to various diseases which are more common for the races at older ages.
There are almost 12% common people common to 10% blacks aged in-between 18-34 years are affected to high blood pressure. Further, this disease is common among 33% and 22% aged between 35-49 years. Further, its diabetes which is common among 10% of black people compared to the 6% whites within the age group of 35-49 years old. There are 0.7% of the blacks within the age group of 18-34 years affected to stoke against 0.4% of the whites within the same age. Further, stroke is common among 2% of the African Americans as against 1% of the whites aged 35-49 years. While for 7% blacks against 4% whites in the age group of 50-64 years. As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention it is the social factors against the others which affects the Afro-American community at an early age, unemployment, poverty, people without any home and various factors like smoking, obesity and inactive lifestyles which impacts the people. Further there are mental health disparities among the patients of Afro-American and the white community. It is found that there are 20% blacks who are reported to getting impacted of psychological distress, while 50% of the patients receives mental health treatment mainly due to socioeconomic factors (Pfizer; 2020).
Particular health issues prevalent in Afro-American community
The specific health issues which are prevalent among the Afro-American community are heart disease which is the reason due to which most of the people dies. It’s more than 20% of the people from the Afro-American community who die due to heart attack than the people from the Caucasian community. Further, the heart disease among this community occurs within the age group of 18-49. The rate of death due to heart attack is twice among the Afro-American community than the whites.
Secondly, it’s the high blood pressure which is a risk factor for the heart disease. High blood pressure develops at an earlier age, is severe and is uncontrollable among the African American community. The Afro-American community have 40% more chances to of getting affected to high blood pressure than the people of the Hispanic community. The numbers are even worse at 60% for the women of the black community.
Thirdly, its obesity among the Afro-American community with obese and overweight people present. Among this group it’s 63% blacks and 77% women are either obese or overweighted. Due to this additional weight these people are prone towards high blood pressure, high cholesterol level and diabetes. All combined increases the chances of heart disease. Its adhering to diet and exercise which can control this disease. Further, as per the latest studies it’s the blacks who are 20% less physically active than the whites.
Fourthly, it’s the diabetes which is prevalent among 60% of the Afro-American people compared to the non-Hispanic whites. They have serious complications like kidney disease and amputation of limbs and their chances to die from this disease increases twice.
