Sita Sings the Blues (2008)
Sita sings the Blues is an animated film which was directed by Nina Paley. She illustrated the story of Rama who is considered as the Hindu Lord in India. It was the animated version which was original, mocking and eccentric film where Sita sings the Blues after Rama rescues her from the
clutches of Ravana and then divorces her in the suspicion of infidelity. Through this film director Nina Paley tries to juxtapose the story of her own divorce which she states as the greatest break-up story ever told. Through this film Nina tries to illustrate the tragic story of Sita who was been kidnapped by Ravana the King of Sri Lanka when Rama went to the jungle for searching a golden deer for Sita.
This film was been featured in the New York International Children’s Film festival. The film was well structured as it was a feast for ear and eyes. Actually, Ramayana is the story of Rama and his wife Sita which was written by sage Valmiki and was later told by many authors in several ways. In this film director Nina Paley uses various styles of animation which is a mixture of traditional and contemporary styles in the film which fascinated the eyes. Thus, for the children watching these films is an unusual technique to hear (Sita Sings the Blues; 2016).
Through this film Nina Parley the director, writer, animator and the producer of ‘Sita sings the Blues’ was able to narrate her own personal project. She tried to relate her own personal story which devasted her life with that of Sita’s. In this film there were numerous interludes which illustrates the congenial as well as strained relationship of Sita with her husband Rama which was quite similar to Nina’s own relationship with her husband. Through this animated film Nina wanted to highlight the dogma of Hindu mythology and the disrespect of the women in the Indian society. Thus, in this film Nina depicted Sita as a minor character but later highlighted Sita as a bold character to make her a star in her own right. Further, Nina gave Sita an exceptional voice in the film which was a mixture of old, innovative and astonishing all at once. But there were some legal issues related to the copyrights due to incorporation of Annette Hanshaw’s voice in the film (Andrea Lipinski; 2011).
In this film Nina Paley illustrates the entire story of Ramayana which was written by sage Valmiki in Sanskrit language and was written in 200 BC. Further, the story of Ramayana was written in different language in South Asia. Although, there were...
