DESCRIPTION The goal of this task is to use the template to fill in the care delivery of cultural awareness and cultural safety that is directed towards an audience of peer colleagues and other Health Professionals. The content of the poster contains an analysis of a case study and informs and promotes a nurse’s or midwife's decision making, actions, and best practice when caring for their client with a specific health condition. The client is an Aboriginal Australian child, of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) cultural background. Choose the focus of your digital poster (building the case study) Being particularly aware of cultural considerations choose one item from List A and one item from List B. Together this information will build a case study to provide the focus of research, within the digital poster content. The overall focus is Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child health (0-15 years). List A - Choose Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander female of a Stage of growth and development. Choose either: - infant (0 -1 year) or, toddlerhood (1 to 3 years) or, preschool (3 to 6 years) or, school age (6 - 12 years) early adolescence (12 to 15 years) Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander male of a Stage of growth and development. Choose either: - infant (0 -1 year) or, toddlerhood (1 to 3 years) or, preschool (3 to 6 years) or, school age (6-12 years) early adolescence (12 to 15 years) List B - Choose Either to align to the List A selection Acute health condition – choose one acute health condition (this means that your digital poster theme is not on the broad topic of acute health illness in general but align to one of the stages of growth and development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations - you have to do some research and choose one acute health illness and focus your digital poster content on the selected topic). Acute health is reactive, episodic care that is cure focused. Infectious disease condition – choose one infectious disease (this means that your digital poster theme is not on the broad topic of Infectious disease in general but aligned to one of the stages of growth and development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations - you must do some research and choose one infectious disease specific to the focus of your digital poster content. Infectious disease is proactive, ongoing and prevention/management focused. NOTE: Foetal Alcohol Syndrome, Low Birth Weight and SIDS are not relevant for this poster. The central focus of the poster is on the client's health. These conditions listed here do not support closing the gap initiative's, promoting the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. Refer to textbook reading for this Module for more information and clarity on this requirement. How to create the case study Based on your choice from the information generated by achieving Step 1, you now need to develop a fictional ‘Case Study’ relating to ‘Closing the Gap’ health condition, in ATSI children - (infant/toddler/child/school age or early adolescent). The case study could include elements such as the ATSI client's background and medical history (name, age, religion, next of kin, family situation, where they live, employment, medications, medical and surgical history, prior condition before needing nursing intervention, cultural needs, etc). Start your research around the focus area that you have selected to do and build your case study drawing from information sourced. Think about what you would do when you are working as a nurse caring for such a client in a healthcare environment? Ask the following questions (these responses are not included into the poster itself but may help assist towards developing a detailed health case about the client). What research would I do when caring for this person in my care? What information is necessary to give a summary overview on this client's health circumstances? What other information would be important? What has this client been currently cared for? What are some of my nursing interventions of best practice required to support and assist this client towards safe care? What drug therapy is required or implications to this client and how would I promote their safety surrounding this? As a nurse how am I to provide cultural safety into my nursing care for this client and their family? Remember compiling the poster and giving an analysis of the case study the content read within the poster, needs to flow, as the information informs the reader on issues surrounding the chosen topic. There is a requirement to draw on evidence sourced from readings / literature / publications from the USC library database and align the information into your initial case study of the fictional scenario content you have outlined from Step 1 List A, and research of List B. Researching the client’s health situation/condition Research literature/publications about the client health status and situation/condition selected from List B, to develop the case study. By doing this well and carefully selecting your chosen references, (at this initial stage) the information sourced will promote and support the fictional case. It is expected that the information within the poster is relevant to ATSI child health and the 'real world' circumstance (urban, regional or remote). If the case study is given time and consideration (at the development phase) the literature/publications promoted to support the key points will be of quality and creditable, and supports the context of the discussion throughout the poster. Note: Cultural safety considerations specifically linked to your case study should be highlighted to reflect your awareness on these matters and are relevant to the nursing care actions identified. Designing your Digital Poster The poster content and design follow these main processes: Poster Title and authors name (you are the author) Introduction Case Study (this is given in dot point form. Dot point form only occurs in this section and no other area of the poster) Topic Information – Pathophysiology/ illness prevalence in Indigenous communities, etc (research on the problem) Nursing Interventions and Drug Therapy (best practice nursing assessment, implementation and outcomes) Cultural Safety in nursing practice (best practice nursing assessment, implementation and outcomes) Reference List – 6 x references only (quality journal publications cited in-text, and the reference list) Further information to support each section on your digital poster content Poster Title and authors name (you are the author) Introduction: should introduce the focus of the work. Consider the opening statement on current circumstances with concepts such as i.e. ATSI health and wellness.... A child client with.... Case Study: this needs to be presented in dot point form (this section only of the poster). The compiled case study should include your clients background and history. (e.g. name, age, religion, next of kin, family support, where they live, employment/schooling, medications, medical and surgical history, condition prior to needing care/intervention, cultural needs (important), other, etc. NOTE: - your case study does not require all these points / or may include other points that have not been mentioned here in this example - your case study has to make logical sense and be based current health circumstances found in your research (refer back to point made in Step 3). Topic Information: should include one of the topics from Step 1/ List B. You need to read and research information around the current health issue to decide on one (1) specific health topic. Consider the pathophysiology and prevalence in Aboriginal communities, possible treatment including drug therapy in this description. Nursing Interventions: is based on your nursing assessment and knowledge and the interventions required for the selected health issue. It may include drug therapy interventions as a nursing application. It is imperative that your research and evidence obtained promote nursing knowledge and critical thinking on the analysis of care provision aligned to the specific case study and should promotes best practice outcomes. Cultural Safety: information about cultural awareness and cultural safety is explained with relevance to the client in your case study and includes how as a nurse you would apply cultural safety principles into care and the practice of nursing. There is required a demonstration of understanding and the importance of practicing in a culturally safe way for this client.
