John Winthrop’s Speech
Purpose
John Winthrop delivered this speech after his impeachment trial. He
was an English lawyer and one of the founding figures of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He led the first immigrants from England to America in 1630 and was the governor of the colony for 20 years. He was not only a governor but also a spiritual leader who was held in esteem by the people. This is inferred in the way he addresses the people and the long years he served as governor.
