Aircraft Maintenance AVA 20008 Second Semester 2020Tutorial Exercise737 MAX Grounding and Related IssuesThe tutorial exercise picks up on the in-class discussions of the 737MAX grounding. The questions are opinion-based but will be assessed on the strength of the supporting arguments and the credibility of the references quoted.Choose ONE question from the four below and write no more than 1500 words for the whole assignment (excluding references). Your response must take a clear position. Please note that dot-points, diagrams, flow-charts and simple logic are viewed more favorably than volume and waffle. The assignment is due by close of business 30 October 2020.Question 1:Based on what was known at the time, was the 737MAX8 grounded soon enough?Issues that you may consider in your response:Authorities around the world grounded the 737Max between 11 – 13 March. Why did it take until then? / If you were the FAA what would you have done, when would you have done it & why? / What if you were CASA? Were the regulators too slow or too fast in their groundings? Be careful with this question – 20/20 hindsight will not be rewarded your resources should be considered to cut off at 13 March 19. Quoting, or clearly using later material will be penalized.Question 2:What regulatory changes are appropriate as a result of the issue and the subsequent investigations?Issues that you may consider in your response:What have the regulatory community done since the grounding? What about Grandfathering? What changes do you anticipate in the regulatory realm? (meaning: Design, Operations, Maintenance Control etc. – please consider all areas that you think are relevant) Note that this is a high-level question but the response does require some specifics (don’t just say “more regulation” or “better technology”)Question 3:Has the mainstream media been fair to the airlines, Boeing and the regulators?Issues that you may consider in your response:Was Lion Air treated fairly in the early days following their accident? There were multiple technical log documents published on the internet following the Lion Air crash and the real one can be found in the preliminary investigation report.Early news photos indicated that the aircraft had hit the water at high speed. What specific observations support this assertion?Question 4:If the 737 Max went back in service next week, what would it take to convince you to take a flight on it?Issues that you may consider in your response:What would make a recurrence of the issue extremely remote? Would additional system redundancy be required? Would a software change alone be sufficient to convince you that the problem was solved? What changes would need to occur to the certification process?Swinburne University 2020 2Question 5In one sense, there were very few slices of cheese involved in these accidents. There was a quality issue with the AOA sensor, some fundamental design flaws and an SoD regulator who could have provided more stringent oversight during certification. What about the operators should they have been more pro-active?There were signs of a fault on one of the crashed aircraft on the previous sector. Was reasonable action taken?Should airlines wait for a cue from the regulators..? Should they have just stepped up and grounded the aircraft like Qantas did in the wake of the QF32 back in 2010…??Should operators have simply accepted the initial FAA AD as being an end to the issue? (Try to resist hindsight)Think about the responsibility of the accountable manager, the continuing airworthiness manager (and yes, assume that Ethiopia and Indonesia have identical positions under their regulations, either that or pretend they were both Australian operators).

Introduction
The distortion in the notice has become a problem that has attracted public attention in recent years. The term "fake news" adds a similar older term to the glossary to indicate a deviation from authenticity. Researchers are racting to this public concern. This study believes that imperfect information dissemination is inherent to some mass media, and it uses the author's media framework to find the recent development of the fatal Boeing MAX 737 aircraft in three media (mainstream media, analytical media, and social media.
Was Lion Air treated fairly in the early days following their accident?
After the accident, the authorities and the public were generally shocked and distrusted because the plane was very new as well as crashed within minutes after takeoff. Although the official investigation has not yet been completed at the time of writing, preliminary outcomes have identified several technical issues related to the aircraft in both crashes. For some time, the public's attention has been focused on aircraft automation called the Maneuverability Enhancement System, which controls the up and down movement of the aircraft (BBC News, 2019). Allegedly, it was provided by an erroneous measurement of the aircraft's vertical angle (pitch angle) sensor, indicating that its pitch angle was higher than it was. With the support of Boeing's press release, these stories of technical problems and supposed pilot errors took up months. But I heard some different opinions, which expanded the scope of technical analysis. Airlines that own the grounded 737 MAX have been rescheduling their service hours to comply with the FAA's expected repair procedure approval (McCurdy, 2012). After the general meeting of shareholders, Boeing's management structure remained unchanged. The company appointed a full-time lawyer to handle legal proceedings. The mainstream media has regularly reported the price of Boeing stock. Boeing Co. said it has settled 90% of unlawful death claims filed by the U.S. court for the crash of a 737 Max aircraft operated by Lion Air in 2018. Boeing said in a document in the Chicago Federal Court on Tuesday that claims for 171 of the 189 people on the Lion Air JT 610 have been settled (Robison, Johnsson, Levin and Philip, 2020). The company did not disclose how much money it paid for the families or property of passengers and crew members killed in the crash.
There were multiple technical log documents published on the internet following the Lion Air crash and the real one can be found in the preliminary investigation report.
Before or after the Lion Air 610 fatal crashes or Ethiopian Airlines 302, Boeing did not disclose, did not warn, did not train, or did not address the basic aerodynamic design flaws of the aircraft. Boeing bosses do their best. A search on Twitter on the event name ("Axe the MAX") returned "about twelve tweets, extending through 2019. Many tweets support, however not all. A few users assert that the aircraft will be very safe once it is fixed (Rohmah, Duncan, Laris, and Mahtani, 2019). Twitter also has about 590 followers and bears the "Boycott Boeing" logo. Such as, in July 2019, he posted BBC News on Twitter about the court case taken by a relative of a 737 MAX passenger who lost his life in Indonesia, citing a lawyer’s comment: signed the release and produced [FILE]'s family was deceived. In terms of compensation, insurance companies and their lawyers used them as prey, which ultimately benefited Boeing (Slayton and Spinardi, 2016). Captain Sully Sullenberger is a high-profile tweeter. He is known for effectively landing passenger plane on the Hudson River to...
