Introduction
Agriculture has always been one of the most important activities which man has
engaged in. Agriculture produces food to sustain human kind and also gives direct and
indirect employment to millions across the globe. Given the exponential growth in
population agriculture has witnessed some major technology upheaval. The ways of
farming have changed and technology plays an important role in this. Over use of
farming land has made the use of fertilizers and other chemicals predominant in
agriculture across the world. This has happened to an extent of over use. This over use
has resulted in traces of chemicals and fertilizers left in the food we consume. This has it
health implications.
Organic Farming
One of the important recent developments is the evolution of organic food.
Organic food has always been believed to be beneficial to health and to contain more
nutrient value than ordinary food. Since growth of such food entails usage of lesser
fertilizer and more research goes into it, organic food comes at a premium. This premium
positioning is supported by the belief that it is healthier to consume them than normal
food available in the supermarkets.
Although some school of thoughts tell a different story. Dr Alan Dangour from
the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine says that the studies in the last 50
years there no good evidence that organic food’s nutrient content is not exceeding than
the same or normal food. Difference is not significant between organic and normal food
in their nutrient content, it is not sufficient to have any effect on health, although this
view is criticized by organic food campaigners. Peter Melchett expressed his
disappointment at the way studies have been directed to analyze the metamorphoses
between non-organic and organic. While rejecting the methodology, Melchett supports
the idea of health benefit attached with consumption of organic food as opposed to non-
