INTRODUCTION
WIT is an award-winning movie directed by Mike Nichols, released in 2001. The movie presents the leading character of Emma Thompson, casting Dr.Vivian Bearing’s life at the final stage of ovarian cancer. Dr. Vivian undergoes eight months of extremely disturbing experience of cancer treatment. Dr.Vivian is renowned Professor and distinguished scholar of the 17th century. In spite of being extremely successful, she spent most of her life alone with her books rather than with friends and family. She is often found speaking to the camera and confessing alone in the movie. The film starts with the disclosure of cancer diagnosis to the patient Vivian by Dr.Harvey, during a dialogue. Dr.Harvey in the next instance, explains to her a research experimental process as a first step towards the treatment. And Vivian, hesitatingly without being given any time to analyze the other alternative options, is expected to support the Doctor’s decision and sign the protocol on the paper.
The film passes through different types of communication in relationships of nurses and other healthcare providers with Vivian. The film reveals many cancer treatment screenings, tests and clinical interventions in the hospital and in the process illustrates their ways of communication. At last, Vivian’s death illustrates the ill-fated efforts of healthcare providers aimed to perpetuate their research more than establishing any caring connection with the patient.
PART 1: THEORETICAL ANALYSIS
Effective and Ineffective Communication
The opening scene in the film shows a dialogue between Dr. Harvey Kelekian and Vivian Bearing. Dr. Harvey convinces Vivian for chemotherapy treatment in his research hospital that would fulfill his research objectives of scholarly discipline and would be a great addition to the knowledge. The communication lacks basic human consolation and emotional support for Vivian. Her interactions with Dr.Jason and Nurse Susie also reflect lack of effective human behavior and care in expressions. Explaining the depersonalized attitude of the institute, Vivan says “ They read me like a book.
