The play begins in a somewhat ominous setting, for it begins in the kitchen of an abandoned farmhouse.Almost immediately, the audienceis introduced to several characters- one of them being a sheriff. The setting and the characters set the expectation that some sort of crime has been committed. The protagonist, Mrs Hale, is with Mrs. Peters for the majority of the play. Both the attorney and sheriff (the antagonists) are men, and they clearly discount the women as foolish- assuming that the pair is only interested in "girly" things. As the play progresses, it becomes apparent that the true detectives are Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters. The two women discover Mrs. Wright's bird with its neck snapped, leaving him dead. Mrs. Wright's beloved dead bird is clearly the motive that led her to kill her husband. As the play progresses in a chronological manner, the audience sees the two women hide the bird from the men, therefore protecting Mrs. Wright from a swift conviction. These actions bring about a sense of excitement for the reader, knowing information that other characters in the play do not know. This moment also gives credit to the women, who were completely underestimated by their counterparts- but managed to do the job that the men were supposed to be doing. The play draws attention to the oppressionof women that exists all too much. The play touches on a variety of issues women face- not only are the two main characters belittled and underestimated based on their sex, but one can assume that Mrs. Wright was terribly abused to the point where she killed her husband in his sleep.
2.Questions To Ask
From the title of the play it can be easy to expect something that will happen or happened slightly before the events of a play and will be brought up,in this case the title Trifles can tell the reader that there were small disagreements or fights between people but not much more than that. The reader can further tell what will happen by the fact that despite being mentioned numerous times in the play Mr. and Mrs.Wright are not in the list of characters or in the initial scene so it could be assumed that the trifles have something to do with their relationship. To further that point the first scene almost immediately mentions the presence of the Sheriff and the presence of the County Attorneywhich furthers the idea of their being a fight prior to the events of the story and that it most likely ended in injury or murder as well as the fact it takes place in the Wright farmhouse. The story begins with a more serious tone as the women are on edge and the men are talking in a clearly official capacity about something in what was mentioned to be the abandoned farmhouse of John Wright furthering the suspicion of murder. As the story continues it becomes clearer that they are in fact examining a crime scene that they are unsure of how to approach with a clear gender bias between the male and female characters. The female characters also hint that they know more than the male characters and that John Wright was not who they thought in a way. It is left ambiguousbut in the end it seems like there was a murder and that it was in fact Mrs. Wright who killed her husband and that he may well have been highly abusive.
