ADAD9114 Research Foundations Assessment

Brief

Identify something new that you would like to make or come to know.
It does not matter where you start this assignment, so do not take long to choose something, but try to ensure that it is something that strongly motivates you. Designers might choose a situation that is problematic and deserves to be improved or needs to be understood further. Artists might choose a to make a particular piece of work or experiment with a conceptual approach through which they want to try to express something new or communicate in a new way. Curators might choose to draw attention to neglected creative works they wish to stage in new ways. You should formulate what it is that you would like to make or come to know as a comprehensive single sentence.

Scoping Research

The following can be done in any order. In each case, the point is not to actually do the research project you propose, but to scope its feasibility, doability, process and significance:

  • Precedent identification and mapping

Identify a wide range of creative works that are related to what you a seeking to make or come to know. Categorize these works (e.g., in terms of their practices, time-period or thematic approach) and then draw a map that visually relates them. Locate your intended research project on the map. You may refine the format you used in task 2, but it has to demonstrate new precedents and thinking about their connections.

  • Literature search and mapping
Identify a wide range of research writings that are related to what you are seeking to make or come to know. Categorize these writings (e.g., in terms of their disciplines, time-period or thematic approach) and then draw a map that visually relates them. Locate your intended research project on the map. You may refine the format you used in task 2, but it has to demonstrate new literature relevant to your project.

  • Observational research
Identify a context that is relevant to you what you would like to make or know. Conduct some observations to clarify a) the significance of what you are seeking to make or know
    and/or
    b) issues that might arise if you try to complete what you are seeking to make or know

    Interview research

Identify one or two experts and/ or people who experience things relevant to what you are seeking to make or know and prepare questions for a semi-structured interview (minimum six) to clarify
    a) the significance of what you are seeking to make or know
    and/or

    b) issues that might arise if you try to complete what you are seeking to make or know. You are not required to conduct the interview.

    Research Project Plan

Synthesize what you now know from completing the scoping research (include documentation from each) into a single document that explains clearly:

  • What you are seeking to make or know
This should a clear, comprehensive proposal that demonstrates a shift from what you were originally seeking to make or know. You should explain how this proposal has been informed by your scoping research.

  • Why you are seeking to make or know
What will be the outcome of what you are intending (for whom) and why will that be significant (for whom)? You should explain how this proposal has been informed by your scoping research.

  • How you would ensure that what you will do will carefully negotiate any possible biases that might impact the validity, significance and/ or newness of what you are seeking to make or know and how will you know you have been successful? This should be a research plan identifying what research and creative projects you would undertake, what methods you will use, and how you will evaluate whether you have been successful.

    Submission

Your submission should be a pdf no bigger than 4MB, no more than 10 A4 pages, with at least 500 words – and should include (though not necessarily in this order):

  • Initial project proposal

  • Map of precedents

  • Map of literature

  • Annotated images from your observational research

  • Six questions for a semi-structured interview

  • Final project proposal

  • Explanations about how your scoping research has informed what is now your final research project proposal.
