Activity Sheet-1 Intro to Earth Science - Lecture --42 points

It’s all about relationships. As you prepare for exam-1, review the content below and formulate relationships between various concepts. In many cases, don’t memorize, but explain in your own words and develop a picture in your mind how the concepts work. Most importantly, as you learn the concept and relationship, be able to explain using the proper terminology. Please make sure you take a look at the probable exam essay questions at the end of this study guide.

  1. Define the major areas of Earth Science (geology, meteorology, physical oceanography astronomy)

    1. Relationship question: How is Earth science studied? and explain how the method of studying earth science relates to the major areas of earth science.

  1. Write a brief description describing each step of the scientific method and describe why the scientific method is important to earth processes.

    1. Relationship questions: Write a “brief” paragraph describing an experience you had where you tried something and failed. Then you tried again but maybe failed a second time. Finally, after numerous tries, you finally succeeded.

    2. Using your paragraph, identify statements within your paragraph that use the scientific method steps which allowed you to find success and explain how a person, more than likely, uses the scientific method to succeed in life.

  1. Describe the differences between an isolated, closed and open system.

    1. Relationship question: Are you an open, closed or isolated earth system person. Explain why

  1. Describe the for open system spheres that support the earth’s existence.

    1. Relationship questions: Explain how the four open systems relate to how earth science is studied.

    2. Draw a diagram that illustrates an interaction between at least two open systems -- Do not use the example in the lecture presentation

    3. Explain how you interact with each open system.

  1. Describe the meaning of positive and negative feedback mechanisms.

    1. Relationship questions: Explain how positive/negative feedback relate to how earth science is suddied.

    2. Provide an example of earth processes that demonstrate a positive / negative relationship -- Do not use the example in the lecture.

  1. What is meant by chemical differentiation and the concept of density

    1. Relationship questions: How does a shkened container filled with vegetable oil, plastic beads, copper BB’s, wood chips and marshmallows relate to our earth’s interior?

    2. How does chemical differentiation of our earth’s interior explain the origin of the earth?

  1. Why are you taking the Earth Science course?

    1. Relationship questions: How will completing this class and learning about your earth change your views of your environment?

    2. Although you are probably not majoring in earth science, how will you use this knowledge you learned to make earth a better place to live?

    3. What earth science question or questions do you have in which you have longed for an answer?

Earth Science:
1. Earth science is also known as geoscience and is related to the study of the earth and understand the physical and chemical constitution of our planet and the atmosphere. This science has an older origin a
nd is considered as a branch of planetary science. Earth science encompasses four main branches of study, the lithosphere, the hydrosphere, the atmosphere, and the biosphere.
a) The importance of the study of earth science is very essential in day to day life in this changing world. Due to these studies, scientists can analyze and locate the mineral resources and the energy resources present in the earth. It is an integrated study of the Earth's history, composition, and structure, its atmosphere and oceans, and its environment in space. The value of earth science is important as the interactions of the humans and our activities is related to our planet.
2. The series of steps that are employed by the scientific researchers to understand and study the natural earth science is called as the scientific steps. In these process steps like asking a question, making observations, drawing of hypothesis, conducting scientific experiments and concluding with inference is carried out.
a) The failure that I would state here is the study of the cause of landslide near a highway that was very important for the state. The entire team laid down the steps of the scientific method to be employed. Despite that the study failed and also the team had to encounter failure many more failed attempt. But after that an in depth analysis was done and it was found out that the observations that were being made was wrong and hence it led to wrong hypothesis and so the subsequent steps failed. Then finally all was streamlined and hence the cause of the landslide was known and a remedy was designed.
b) In the above paragraph I would identify the steps of observations and drawing the hypothesis as the major steps which was fine tuned to find success in our study. In real life also a person can use and follow these steps meticulously to find success.
3. A physical system where there is transfer of energy but no transfer for matter with the surrounding is called closed system. The reverse of this is called an open system. In an isolated...
