worksheet
Activity 1: Identify Vascular Tissues On the following page (p2) is a representation of a Basswood Tree cross section, showing the different layers of vascular tissue. Using figure 1 from the lab module as a guide, label and color the following structures.LABEL: Secondary Phloem Secondary Xylem Vascular Cambium COLOR: Vascular Cambium: Yellow Xylem Ray: Orange Phloem Ray: Green Secondary Xylem: Red Secondary Phloem: Blue Activity 2: Growth Rings, Early Wood, and Late Wood Using figures 2 and 3 as a guide, label how many years of growth is present in the sketch, and identify early wood and late wood vessels on the Basswood stem representation on the following page.LABEL: Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Early Wood Late Wood 2 | Page Activity 3: Identifying Universal Cross Sections On the following page (p4) is a rendition of the three universal cross sections of angiosperm wood for you to label and color. Take your time as you work through this sheet. Be sure to complete the activities in order as you read through the module. This will help you to identify landmarks on each section of wood so that you can identify which section is which. It will also begin to help you identify the individual cells found in vascular tissues. Identify the rays in each of the sections of wood and color them blue. These are the same rays you identified in Activity 1. Notice the unique direction and pattern the rays form in each of the three universal cross sections. STOP. Do not continue coloring until the next section. Activity 4: Identifying Angiosperm Vascular Tissue Types Return to the Angiosperm wood rendition (p4). Identify the vessel elements, tracheids, and fibers. Color them as instructed in the handout. Activity 3-4Figure 3. Rendition of angiosperm wood, with all three universal cuts: transverse, radial, and tangential. Rays: Blue Vessel Elements: Yellow Tracheids: Orange Fibers: Red Activity 5: Identifying Gymnosperm Vascular Tissue Types Using the descriptions of the universal sections of wood, the cells types, and the distinguishing characteristics in Lab 5, Section II of the manual, label the cells and structures indicated in the figure. Use the words provided in the word box. Note: rays are labeled on all three surfaces. Transverse Radial Tangential Early Late Ray (x3) Resin Duct Tracheid Activity 6: Putting it All Together Now that you have learned some of the characteristics for identifying cells and structures to differentiate between angiosperms and conifers, look at the prepared slides of the universal cross sections of Quercus (Angiosperm) and Pinus. Identify the transverse, radial, and tangential cross sections. In each cross section, you should label the rays, vessel elements (if present), tracheids, and resin ducts (if present). Determine the best magnification for your learning and draw and label each section.
