According to Ayer statements are meaningless unless they are “tautologies” (they are true by definition) or “statements of fact” (they can be proved by sense observation). think of some true statements that express beliefs that you have at this point in your life about what should matter most in human life, or what you think the purpose of human life should be. Write down those statements in a list making sure they are declarative sentences. Using Ayer’s criterion of meaning, figure out whether each of your statements is a “tautology” or a “statement of fact.” Are any of your statements neither of these? if so, would you say those statements are meaningless? Why? Carnap suggests that when statements are neither tautologies nor statements of fact, they might express feelings like a poem would. Would you say any of the statements on your list just express your feelings? if not, can you think of any statements that you believe, and that would express feelings like Carnap suggests?
