Academic researchers in the United States must follow increasingly stringent guidelines for the protection of human research subjects. Although much research involving interviews with elected or appointed officials is often declared exempt, it must nevertheless be reviewed by institutional review boards at universities and research organizations. The work of policy analysts is usually exempt from direct human subject regulation. Nonetheless, analysts have a responsibility to those who they rely on for information.
