In this assignment you will select a neurological disorder from the list provided, research about the disorder (using authoritative sources), and write a structured essay.  Task 1. Choose the disorder that you will discuss for your essay from the list provided. The topics options for the assignment are listed below. Once you have decided which topic you wish to pursue please join the group in People on Canvas for that topic. Once you open the 'Groups' section you will see a number of groups, one for each topic. To select a topic, simple assign yourself to that group. Please note that there are a limited number of students who can select each topic - once a 'Group' is full, no other students can select that topic. Any students who have not selected a topic on Canvas by Friday of Week 5 will be allocated a topic by the course coordinator. All allocations will be final. While you can discuss the topic with other people in your group, this is an individual assignment and will be assessed accordingly. 1. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) 2. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) 3. Bipolar disorder 4. Narcolepsy 5. Autism Spectrum Disorder  6. Chronic Whiplash Associated Disorder   For your chosen disorder you will need to research the cause and incidence, pathology that occurs to the nervous system, and the neuroanatomical pathways involved that produces the symptoms of the disease. In addition, you should include information on TWO recent (in the last 5 years; 2017 to now) research studies on the topic – these can involve humans or preclinical models (cells/mice/rats). Briefly discuss the research findings and state why each study is important in the overall field of research of this disorder   2. Research your disorder using authoritative sources. Examples of authoritative sources include: Peer-reviewed articles published in scientific journals. You can search for peer-reviewed biomedical science articles via Pub Med or Google Scholar Textbooks authored by experts in the field   3. After completing your research, write a short essay about your chosen disorders. Your essay must incorporate the following: An introduction that outlines the content of your essay  A brief overview that introduces the disorder that you have chosen. This can include information about incidence, patient profile (e.g. age), suggested cause. A description of pathology observed in this disorder  A detailed explanation of how this pathology is believed to produce the symptoms observed A summary of two recent research studies on the topic. Briefly discuss the research findings and state why each study is important in the overall field of research of this disorder.  A conclusion that summarises the key points of your essay.    Format/submission instructions: Your assessment must submitted as a Word (or Word readable) document using a 12 point font.  It is to be between 800 and 1000 words. References: At least five references (primary authoritative sources such as peer-reviewed journal articles) should be included. References should be cited correctly, and presented correctly in text using the author, date style of referencing (Harvard style) NOTE:  references are not included in the word count   Submission date/time: Tuesday 19 OCTOBER, 5pm Mode of submission:      Via Canvas NOTE:  your submission must not just contain course lecture material and will be checked by Turnitin.  You will have two attempts to submit your essay – the first submission will allow you to see your Turnitin similarity score, and the second submission will be final. Penalties will apply for late submissions (10% deduction per day, as per SHBS policy and BIOL1131 course guide). Assessment criteria: Your assessment will be assessed based on content, scientific accuracy, and professional expression and use of quality sources using the below rubric: th Taksh Patel Taksh Patel Taksh Patel Taksh Patel Taksh Patel My topic is “NARCOLEPSY” That is the topic I have been put it so pls do the assignment on that Taksh Patel Taksh Patel 28/09/2021, 14:22 Written assignment on neurological condition https://rmit.instructure.com/courses/79173/assignments/614791 2/2 Total points: 100 Criteria Ratings Pts 10 pts 40 pts 30 pts 10 pts 10 pts Content 10 Pts 100% All information is clear, comprehensive and highly relevant to the topic. NARCOLEPSY
Narcolepsy can be defined as a neurological disorder of chronic nature, where the control of the sleep –wake cycle is lost or disturbed in the brain ('Narcolepsy Fact Sheet' , n.d). There are various signs and symptoms like cataplexy, hallucinations, sleep pa
ralysis, insomnia, and fatigue .Although the exact cause of narcolepsy still evades the researchers at large, but researches indicate that it can be assigned to the autoimmune destruction of the hypocretin releasing neurons in the hypothalamus of the brain. There may be genetic or environmental triggers but till date no specific therapeutic or preventive protocols for the disease. (Kornum et al, 2017).
Normally, sleep induced by the hypothalamus of the brain where the suprachaismatic nucleus in the hypothalamus is stimulated by impulses received form the eye on photoperiodicity. The suprachaismatic nucleus maintains the diurnal rhythm of sleep and wakefulness fullness cycle according to the biological clock and modifies the behavior. The change of level of awareness between sleep and wakefulness is under the control of the brain stem including the pons, and medulla oblongata, that communicates with the hypothalamus to maintain that control (‘Brain basics: Understanding sleep . n.d.).The two internal biological cycles, namely the circadian rhythm and the sleep –wake homeostasis play fundamental roles in the normal sleep wakefulness pattern of an individual,
In case of narcolepsy, the normal transition between the sleep-wakefulness is extremely raid or may be even absent and exhibits excessive daytime sleepiness in the form of a “sleep attack” so as to say, the person may fall asleep even without understanding at any point of time and anywhere. Narcolepsy is also present in other animals like dogs and is not strictly human disorder.in additions to falling asleep there can me multiple events associated with it. One of the most important is cataplexy which refers to a sudden loss of the muscle tome although for a brief period of time .It has been seen to be triggered by emotional cues like laughter or anger.
In addition, there are other features like some behaviors which are involuntary that can result in malfunctioning of the normal processes of behavior like misplacement of the personal or other items. Misplacement of things or objects can occur without any memory of the event. Besides, there are events of sleep paralysis associated with narcolepsy that prevents speaking of the patient under the effect .It is usually found to occur as the affected person either in one he verge of waking up or falling asleep .Actually in effect, the brain becomes alert but the muscles still remain in their resting sleep mode causing inability to move...
