The modern literature is considered to be an instinctive reaction in opposition to the Victorian
culture. It refers to something which is intangible and intimate, that cannot be analyzed
easily. However the word “modern” has not found any formal definition, even though it has
not been neglected entirely by criticism. The word modern is largely guarded by the virtue of
individualism and experimentation with a distinctive set of imagination, and is often
characterized by the breakaway from the fundamental constants of the tradition. Though the
intellectuals and artistic valued the contemporary literature and even inherited various
patterns from the same, they believed that the way or manner in which the previous
generation did things was culturally dead. Even the last volume of Oxford History on English
literature did not provide a general definition of “modern” rather it consists of essays on
Eight Modern Writers.
