A wife told her husband that she wanted a divorce. The following day, a psychiatrist whom she had never met before arrived at her home but did not tell her that he was there to examine her. A few days later, the psychiatrist and another physician signed commitment papers for her, and she was forcibly removed from her home and taken to the hospital. She refused food and medication for six days and was refused permission to mail letters, use the telephone, or call her attorney. She finally was able to contact her relatives by telephone. Should she be released?
