A study by researchers at North Carolina State University found thousands of errors in 12 of the most widely used high school science texts. For example, the Statue of Liberty is left-handed; volume is equal to length multiplied by depth. The books are so bad that Philip Sadler, director of science education at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, decided to conduct a study of their effects. He recorded the physics marks of college students who had used a textbook in high school and the marks of students who did not have a high school textbook. Do these data allow us to infer that students without high school textbooks in science outperform students who used textbooks?
