Introduction
Water Quality of Lake Huron can be called a chief issue of concern these days since;
water is one out of the most significant resources on our planet which influences almost every
aspect of life. A major percentage of water demanded by us is supplied by the lakes and
according to me, “Poor water quality of lake can lead towards disturbance of whole ecosystem”.
Water quality can be defined as; a combination of physical, chemical and biological
characteristics of a water resource which affect every life form in its contact.
Body
Though, there are various factors because of which Lake Huron’s water quality is being
impaired, yet diverse pollutants that can be found in a water source involving: chemicals, metals,
and nutrients are considered primarily responsible for it. In fact, such pollutants can be
introduced into water bodies from two types of sources: point and non-point. Point sources
involve urban areas, sewage treatment plants, and industries. Runoff released from urban areas
consists of chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, and suspended solids which are dumped directly into
this lake through storm sewers. Additionally, Bruce Nuclear Power Development (BNPD) which
is the biggest industrial facility along Lake Huron also influences the quality of lake water in
several ways for instance, through discharge of chemical, air and thermal pollutants.
Other sources of pollution in this lake are non-point ones which may involve runoff from
agricultural fields (nutrients, disease causing organisms, and pesticides etc), outflow from
