A standard softball has a mass of approximately 190 g and a diameter of approximately 95 mm. A pitching machine shoots out a softball at a velocity of 15 m/s in the horizontal direction and imparts a backspin of 4500 rpm to the ball. The relationship of the lift coefficient to the spin ratio is approximately the relationship shown in Figure 10.26. Contrast the lift force on the ball with the weight of the ball to determine whether the ball will move upward or downward after leaving the pitching machine. Assume standard air at sea level.
