A stainless steel (k = 20 W/m K) fin has a circular cross-sectional area with a diameter of 2 cm and a length of 10 cm. The fi n is attached to a wall that has a temperature of 300°C. The fluid surrounding the fi n has an ambient temperature of 50°C and the heat transfer coefficient is 10 W/m2K. The end of the fin is insulated. Determine (a) the rate of heat dissipation from the fi n, (b) the temperature at the tip, (c) the rate of heat trans fer from the wall area covered by the fi n if the fi n is not used and (d) the heat transfer rate from the same fi n geometry if the stainless steel fi n is replaced by a fictitious fin with infinite thermal conductivity.
