A short paper is a mini essay. Your short paper will need to have an introduction and conclusion, body paragraphs, an argument and draw on scholarly evidence to support your argument. It is also important that you write clearly using proper grammar, spelling and punctuation and reference throughout your work. Be sure to also include a reference list. All your references should be correctly formatted in APA style. (How do sociologists explain gender and in what ways does gender shape social life?) question -
The paper should:
Refer to and explain relevant sociological theoryon the topic covered in the course or required reading
(e.g. sociological explanations of gender/ race/ class or ethnicity).
Demonstrate an understanding of key concepts used (please note, this does not mean the insertion of a
definition, but discussion and application of the concept in a way that shows your understanding. Aim touse your own words- paraphrase - as much as possible; avoid lengthy or excessive use of quotes and do not rely primarily on direct quotes to explain key concepts and/or theory).
Have a clear focus and manageable scope (i.e. it is not possible to discuss all of the ways that gender or race interact to shape social life so you will need to narrow your focus to be more specific. Focusing your response on the findings of 1-2 empirical articles from the further reading list will help with this).
Synthesise information on the topic towards making an argument.
Show that you have engaged with sociological reading on the topic.
Cite and referenceat least four scholarly sourcesfrom the further reading list for your topic, including at
least one original, empirical research article(in blue on the further reading list available on theUniversity’sLearning Management System). Please note that you are not expected to undertake independent research for this paper but rather to demonstrate the depth of your engagement with course materials.
Indicate the word length at the end or on the cover sheet. The word count should not be more than 10% over or under the word limit–marks may be deducted if they are.
