(b) Using this case history as an illustration: The patient behaves inconsistently by expressing a desire for love and affection (which refl ects the dimly sensed healthy needs), while usually avoiding other people (this being the chosen neurotic solution to the problem of basic anxiety). He has great diffi culty making such decisions as whether to go to a party, which refl ects the confl ict between his need for love and the usual course of moving away from people. (Since this decision is typically made when he is alone, his anxiety about being with people is not as great, and his true wishes are somewhat more accessible.)
