A researcher has the following hypotheses: (a) people with phobias are particularly sensitive to minor levels of stimulation, and (b) females with phobias are particularly sensitive. A fear survey questionnaire is given to 300 college freshmen. Of the 300, 50 students have high phobia scores. From the non-phobic participants, 30 females and 20 males are randomly selected. Thus, groups of 50 (30 female, 20 male) phobic and 50 (30 female, 20 male) non-phobic participants are constructed. All participants are tested on their sensitivity, a task that yields a simple score of the number of correct responses.
