A rectangular channel expands smoothly from a width of 5 ft to 10 ft. Upstream of the expansion, the depth of flow is 4 ft and the velocity of flow is 4 ft/s. Estimate the depth of flow after the expansion. Use an expansion coefficient of 0.50.
Water flows at a depth of 5 ft and a velocity of 3 ft/s in an 8-ft-wide rectangular channel. Find (a) the height of the hump required to produce critical flow without affecting the upstream depth, and (b) the depth of water over the hump when its height is one half of that in (a).
