A proposed refrigeration system is to remove 50 kW of heat from a space at –3°C and reject the heat to a space at 25°C. The system is to use 20 kW of power. Is this process possible?
An inventor claims to have invented a power-saving refrigerator that can keep objects at –5°C while the refrigerator is located in an environment that is maintained at 25°C. To prove his system works as claimed, he places a 2-kg block of heated iron (= 0.447 kJ/kgK) at 75°C into the refrigerator. The power meter on the refrigerator reads that it is using 100 W of electrical work. The refrigerator is operated for 1 min, and the temperature of the iron is read to be –5°C. Is this possible?
