A position paper differs from a traditional term paper in that it includes your opinions, viewpoints, feelings,
and
the evidence that supports them. The main reason for this activity is to understand an issue better by researching
all
sides of the issue
thoroughly. Choose an environmental topic that interests you. Research the different sides of the issue and think about your position on the issue. Write a position paper based on the guidelines outlined below. There is a
ten-page maximum for the paper. If your paper is longer than ten pages, I will return the pages over the limit. Use at least
ten sources
for the paper and make sure you use the proper format for referencing your sources. The book,
Taking Sides
by T. Goldfarb is a good way to explore different issues if you are having a hard time deciding what issue to analyze. The

Note: Personal communications should be referred only in text. Provide initials and as exact a date as possible. Explain
who
the person is and why their input is important.

Examples of proper APA (American Psychological Association) format for LITERATURE CITED:

Journal Article: Adelgid, B. W. (1999). Killing fraser firs in the Smoky Mountains.
Journal of Exotics and Introduced Species.

(15), 13-15.

Book: Boar, E. W. (1993).
Upsetting the balance of the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. (3rd

A brief listing of some suggestions that should be implemented in your position paper to ensure the highest quality:

Make sure your “voice” is apparent in the paper – don’t overuse quotes.

Have others proofread your paper for spelling, grammar, and organizational problems. Have at least one literate, logical friend read through your paper carefully to check for “flow of logic” mistakes, ambiguous statements, etc.

Make sure you write a position paper and NOT a traditional term paper. There is a difference! If you are unsure about the difference reread the guidelines and talk with me.

before
you turn in the paper.

Introduction
In the ideal state of society, there should be a harmony which ash to be maintained
between the natural resources and the humans living in the same ecological structure. In other
words, it is the responsibility of the human beings to use the natural resources as per their needs
not as per their greed. However, in the modern context, several regions of the world have already
violated this concept and they are now undergoing the disturbed state of envir
onmental
conditions.
In the special context of India, the nation having the second largest population in the
world has now stood on the alarming point of different genres of the pollution especially the air
pollution. The status of air pollution, as per global standards, is not up to mark in India and the
government is held responsible for not taking grave actions against the commercial industry
functioning as a catalyst to maximize the negative impacts of air based diseases, endangering the
lives of common people specifically in the metro city population of India.
The Massive Growth of Industry: First Cause of Air Pollution in Indian Context
The over development and massive growth of industrial sector in Indian metros is one of
the prime reasons behind the rise of air pollution in Indian cities. it is quite ironical to state that
India is a country where people still rely too much in the agricultural farming and they connect
with nature; there are several deities and gods which they pursue and adore because it is the
mother nature which gives them power to live—it is their ancient belief which has been rooted in
almost every religion developed in the Indian context.
However, in spite of the fact that half of the national population lives in the villages
where the ratio and scale of air pollution in still low, the „so called‟ developed regions like metro
cities of India are lingered behind in the race of sustaining their environmental balance and it has
become the cause of several unwanted diseases to happen in the lives of the ordinary people.
Further in the same context, the reason behind the rise of this massive air polluted state is
the over growth of industrial sector which has not observed the set parameters to sustain the
natural resources intact. For example, Kanpur, which has been perceived the Manchester of Asia,
is now counted as the second most polluted city in UP, the largest state of India—there are more
than 25 states and five central provinces in India. In terms of air pollution, the diseased air of the
city has enforced the global environmental norms to be introduced as per the needs of the
common citizens. (Gupta, Usha, 2006) the state of air pollution in cities like Kanpur is the
consequence of the over industrialization which brings forward several other issues related with
it. The massive workforce, their living conditions along with the waste management function like
a catalyst to spoil the balance of the air.
In the same context, the most dreadful condition is seen in the National capital region of
the country which is Delhi and nearby cities. The revolution in industrial sector has caused the
emission of harmful gases and even the World Health Organization has mentioned about it in the
recently published article. In several of the articles and research studies, it has been proven that
the state of Delhi in terms of air pollution is not worthy to be adopted by any means. “It says the
number of deaths in India caused by air pollution is only a "fraction less" than the number of
deaths caused by tobacco usage, and adds that three per cent of the GDP is lost due to air
pollution.” (PTI, 2011)
The data mentioned above is alarming enough to show that if a nation‟s 3% of GDP is
awarded to manage the deaths caused by air pollution, it must have been a grave concern and the
state of pollution is definitely something which has be managed by all means.
The Migration of People from Rural to Urban Areas: Overloaded Metro Cities
In the same context, the second reason which has caused the state of air pollution as the
prime disturbing factor in the metro cities of India is the massive amount of people migrating
from their local towns to the cities where the industrial growth is taking place. In fact, this
migration is causing the cities to be overloaded with people and even the basic needs of the
common working class are not fulfilled, most often, they are compromised.
This concept of migration can be referred to the industrial revolution of Europe which
took place in the 17
th
century and it had caused several cities of Europe filled with the people
like the swarms of flies and the deaths by the epidemic were known to all;...
