A plate of BCC iron is exposed to a carburizing (i.e, carbon-rich atmosphere) on one side and a carbon-free atmosphere on the other side at a temperature of 700°C. Assuming that steady state diffusion is achieved (Fick’s first law), calculate the diffusion flux of carbon through the plate if the concentrations of carbon at positions of 2 mm and 10 mm beneath the carburizing surface are 1.0 kg/m3 and 0.5 kg/m3. The diffusion coefficient for carbon through the plate is 3x10-11 m2/s at this temperature.
