A plate girder that spans 60 ft between two columns in a multistory building is to be designed. This girder is one of a series over an assembly room where the columns were deleted within the assembly room. The overall girder depth cannot exceed 73.5 in. Service loads on the girder are as follows: live = 0.84 kips/ft; dead = 2.35 kips/ft (includes an estimate for the girder weight). Concentrated loads (from the columns above the girder) at 20 ft from each end of the girder are as follows: live = 110 kips; dead = 31 kips. Use the Conventional Design Method without any intermediate web stiffeners and F = 36 ksi for all steel. Assume that the governing LRFD loading combination is 1.d + 1.6L.
