A person's backstage self is the aspect of their personality they appear to be when they are in their comfort zone. There are no kinds of impressions to be made here because we are accepted as we are.
Soc 201 Summer 2021 Final Exam This exam has three questions worth 10, 15 and 5 points, respectively. You have until noon on Friday June 25th to submit your answers into the Blackboard system. 1. (10 points) Please write a reflective essay addressing the following: Four of the theorists/theories we covered in the second half of this course described how “reality” (or, in one case, hyperreality) is created: (i) Goffman (dramaturgy), (ii) Berger & Luckmann (Social Construction of Reality), (iii) Garfinkel (Ethnomethodology), and (iv) Baudrillard (hyperreality). Pick two of these theories/theorists to talk about. Using terms and concepts from the two theories/theorists you picked, explain how your reality (or hyperreality) is created every day. Make sure to explain it in terms of your own life, using examples from your own life. Then, after you have done this, make an argument as to which one of these two theories is better in terms of understanding and explaining your life experiences, and why it is better. Use as many relevant terms and concepts from the course to answer your question as possible. Your essay answer should be at least 600 words long. 2. (15 points) Please write a reflective essay addressing the following: Background: Think of a specific incident or event that you experienced in your life. It can be from any time in your life, as long as you remember the details of it well. Try to pick an event that is relevant to as many of the terms below as possible. In your essay: (1) briefly describe the incident or event. Then, (2) explain how each (and therefore all) of the terms/concepts from the list below is relevant to the incident (or event), how it is relevant to your participation in the incident (or event), and/or how it is relevant to who you were or how you acted during the incident (or event). Concepts to use: · White privilege OR privilege (no particular theorist, but needs to be consistent with how the term was defined in this course) · Ideological solidarity (Hill Collins) · Official accounts (Smith) · Disembedding mechanisms (Giddens) · Frame (Goffman) OR simulacra (Baudrillard) OR intersubjectivity (Berger & Luckmann) (**please note: I want you to show me you understand more than what you wrote about for question 1. For that reason, I need you to do the following: if you wrote about Goffman for question 1, you need to write about simulacra or intersubjectivity here; if you wrote about Baudrillard and hyperreality for question 1, you need to write about Goffman’s frames or Berger & Luckmann’s intersubjectivity here; if you wrote about both Goffman and Baudrillard for question 1, then do not write about either frame or simulacra, but write about Berger and Luckmann’s intersubjectivity here; etc. In other words, pick the concept that does NOT come from a theorist you wrote about for question 1) If the term/concept is not relevant to your incident/event: If you cannot see any way to link one or more of these concepts to your incident/event, then you need to explain why this concept is not relevant. Hint: if you say it is not relevant, you really need to convince me that you really understand the concept well enough to convince me it is really not relevant. In all cases (whether the concept applies or not), you need to make it clear that you understand the concept and why it was (or was not) relevant to the incident/event. Your essay answer should be at least 600 words long. 3. (5 points) The following is more of a short answer/short essay question than a reflective essay question. In your own words, explain how sociology is a colonized (or colonial) discipline. Make sure to make use of content, terms and concepts we covered in this course. Please note: you don’t need to explain how to decolonize sociology, just to explain the way in which it is a colonial enterprise. (Hint: think about Modernity). The next step, if we were to write a longer essay, would be to talk about how it can be decolonized, but I am not asking for that here. Your answer should be at least 250 words long. Please note: Please do not be tempted to use internet sources to help you answer this question. You can and should answer this question based on content from this course. In the past, I had to give more than one student a 0 on their final exam because they copied internet content for their answer to this question (i.e. they plagiarized part or all of their answer). If you don’t know the answer, you are better off not answering the question than getting a 0 on the final exam.
