A number of research questions are stated below. Each can be answered by at least one of the techniques presented in Chapters 11 through 13. For each research situation, use the social survey data collected from 25 respondents shown below to compute the most appropriate measure of association and write a sentence or two of response to the question. The questions are presented in random order. In selecting a measure of association, you need to consider the number of possible values and the level of measurement of the variables.
a. Are scores on “number of sex partners over the past year” associated with education or age? Compute a measure of association, assuming that the variables are interval-ratio in level of measurement.
b. Is fear of walking alone at night associated with sex? Is it associated with marital status?
c. Is support for spanking associated with religious service attendance? Is it associated with marital status?
