A new group, called the Group on Basic Telecommunications, continued the work after July 1996. The main mandate of the group, which was open to all WTO member states and held monthly meetings, was to stimulate more countries to make commitments, to deal with the issue of liberalizing satellite services, and to solve a number of issues related to the provision of telecommunications services.
