Previous research suggests the mean wingspan for a monarch butterfly is 50 mm with a standard deviation of 2.75 mm. There is some speculation that changes in the environment (for example, pollution and climate) have caused greater variability in the wingspan. A random sample of monarch butterflies was obtained, and the wingspan of each (in mm) is given in the following table.
