A monarch butterfly may fly as many as 2000 miles during its migration to Mexico. These amazing creatures actually vary dramatically in weight, color, and even flying behavior. Previous research suggests the mean wingspan for a monarch butterfly is 50 mm with a standard deviation of 2.75 mm. There is some speculation that changes in the environment (for example, pollution and climate) have caused greater variability in the wingspan. A random sample of monarch butterflies was obtained, and the wingspan of each (in mm) is given in the following table.
