. (a) In my teens, I became an avid bridge player. For some 25 years I participated in tournaments, read voraciously about bridge, discussed bridge with friends for hours on end, and even wrote numerous bridge books and articles. At about age 45, enantiodromia set in. My interest in bridge yielded to almost complete disinterest; I hardly ever play, and I no longer read or write about it. (Some might say that I “burned out.”). This supports Jung’s belief that middle age is highlighted by a shift in one’s strongest convictions and interests. (b) Consider any of the all too common professional athletes or politicians who are consistently arrogant and self-centered.
