A house in Vancouver has an effective UA-value of 1.3 kW°Cí1 . It is heated using a ground-source heat pump, of capacity 25 kW and average COP 3.5. The average ground temperature for heat absorption by the heat pump is 7.2°C. The internal heat gains and the indoor temperature of the house are 5.4 kW and 22°C respectively. The degradation coefficient due to cycling of the heat pump is 0.25. Calculate (i) heat pump balance temperature, (ii) the heating load, the heat supplied by the heat pump and the auxiliary energy source, (iii) the electrical energy input to the heat pump, and (iv) the average COP. Sketch the energy flow rates versus ambient temperature graphs.
