A fuel-fired furnace of rated capacity of 30 kW and efficiency 90% is used to heat a house in Vancouver (see problem 13.4). The balance temperature for the house is 18.3°C. (i) Calculate the yearly energy input to the furnace using the bin method, (a) neglecting the performance degradation due to cycling, and (b) assuming a degradation coefficient of 0.25. (ii) Use the degree–day method to estimate the yearly energy input to the furnace. (iii) Obtain the answers to (a) and (b) if the balance temperature decreases to 12°C due to design changes.
