A fine chemical operation requires that 1400 L (1.4 m3) of a waterlike material be cooled from T1i= 80 ◦C to T1 = 50 ◦C before it can be further processed. There are two jacketed dished head pressure vessels available [Figure 3.1(a)]. The process fluid can be cooled by placing it in one of the vessels with a charge of chilled water in the jacket available at T2i= 5 ◦C.
Vessel A has a jacket volume of 1.4 m3and Vessel B has a jacket volume of 0.5 m3. We need to determine which vessel or vessels can be used and what final utility water temperature T2will be reached. The warm utility water must be returned to the chilled water unit. Both liquids can be assumed to have the density and heat capacity of water.
