A conservation group purchased an old power transmission tower with the goal of turning the lower part into a platform for watching wildlife in a local park. We will need to consider the effect of gravity loads and lateral loads on the truss. The members are most susceptible to damage from compression. Therefore, before we begin our detailed analysis, we want to know which members will be most highly loaded in compression by the combination of gravity and lateral loads. Considering only the lateral load, determine the sense of the axial force in each member. Considering only the gravity loads, determine the sense of the axial force in each member. Use superposition to determine which members are most highly loaded in compression. Also determine which members are in tension under the combined loading.
