I believe that you have developed your own philosophy of education, even before you enrolled in this course. More specifically, you should have formed certain conceptions of human nature, the aims of school education, methods of teaching and learning, and the relationship between school and society. However, a lack of systematic and reflective examination of one’s own philosophy of education can often lead to a dogmatic attitude about one’s beliefs and values. The primary purpose of this course is to invite all of you to engage in a collective inquiry into the major schools of philosophical thought, which have shaped historical and current educational policies and practices. It is my belief that such an inquiry will further equip us with basic knowledge and with skills for developing a critical appraisal of our personal philosophies of education.

The public dimension of philosophy of education focuses on the beliefs and values that support public educational policies and practices. Conventionally, philosophy is regarded as the pursuit of wisdom. Yet, it is virtually impossible to reach a universal agreement on what ought to be considered as wise educational policies/practices. To a large extent, different societies endorse different conceptions of human nature, personal growth and social betterment, equality, and social justice. Since we do not develop our philosophical perspectives in a social vacuum, it is essential for us to examine the cultural, economic, legal, and political contexts of different educational philosophies.
(iii) Professional Dimension of Philosophy of Education
The professional dimension of philosophy of education refers to the classical and contemporary philosophical work of thinkers and educators who have developed special interests and skills in undertaking critical and reflective examination of personal and public educational practices. In our learning community, we will be reviewing and critiquing the aforementioned classical and contemporary philosophy work that sheds light on the personal and public dimension of philosophy of education.
