A brass rod of diameter 25 mm is enclosed centrally in a steel tube with internal diameter 25 mm and external diameter 40 mm, both having a length of 1.0 m and rigidly fastened at the ends. Determine the stresses in the rod and tube resulting from a temperature increase of 100°C. The steel has a modulus of elasticity of 200 GPa and a coeffcient of linear expansion of 12×10–6per °C and the brass a modulus of elasticity of 100 GPa and a coeffcient of linear expansion of 19×10–6per °C.
