(a) At a family picnic, I see a 6-year-old child hanging on to the top of a jungle gym. I construe his behavior as “adventurous” (as opposed to “timid”), because the drop is only a few feet and the ground is soft. But his mother construes the situation as “dangerous” (as opposed to “safe”), and is angry because I make no effort to help him. (b) One individual regards abortion as “murder” (as opposed to “life-saving”), while another construes it as “freedom” (as opposed to “fascism”). (c) Consider such constructs as “interesting versus boring,” “useful versus useless,” and “thought-provoking versus incomprehensible.”
