Introduction
The notion of animal testing in the United States for different kinds of purposes, ranging from testing for the cosmetic industry to the healthcare industry has been prevalent since time immemorial. Animals are tested commercially for several reasons; they are inclusive of developing medical treatments, determining the toxicity of medications, ensuring the safety of different products meant for human use, and so on.
Research Question
Is it correct to use animals for lab testing?
Thesis Statement
Considering the aspect of animal rights, it is incorrect to use animals for lab testing in different industries across the United States.
Supporters of Animal Testing
Several citizens across the United States have supported the notion of using animals as test specimens for laboratories. The reasons for supporting animal testing are given as follows.
Provides Life Saving Treatments
Animal testing in the labs has resulted in contributing to life-saving cures and treatments for various kinds of ailments, including terminal illnesses. Over the last 100 years, animal testing has proven to be extremely beneficial for several breakthroughs in the scientific arena. Various treatments and cures have been obtained in treating diseases such as breast cancer, brain injury, leukemia in children, multiple sclerosis, tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, and so on (Garattini&Grignaschi, 2017). Through the process of animal testing, different healthcare tools and equipment have seen the light of day. Development of pacemakers, anesthetics, cardiac valve substitutes, and so on has been possible through lab testing.
Ensure Safety of Vaccines
In the wake of a global pandemic, where scientists are struggling to make vaccines for the Covid 19 virus, the importance of animal testing has become more intense. To ensure the safety of vaccines, scientists need to test them on the lab rats, which have been genetically modified. By checking the vaccines on the lab rats, the scientists ensure that injecting it would not make the impact of the virus worse. Intensive researches need to be conducted to make sure that they do not lead to a situation called vaccine enhancement (Sura, Hutt & Morgan, 2021). This is a condition where the vaccine worsens the particular disease in the human body.
No Good Alternative
Animal testing is the only comprehensive method of testing on a living body. There are plethoras of tests that cannot be conducted, properly and efficiently, without the help of laboratory animals. For instance, to test the side effects of a particular drug specimen, the test subject needs to possess a circulatory system that can carry the drug to the different organs of the body. Other conditions such as blindness as well as high blood pressure cannot be tested through the process of tissue...
