(a) A stream of nitrogen gas is passed in a closed system over a boat containing mercury at 100◦ C. The flow rate of the nitrogen is slow enough to allow this gas to become saturated with mercury vapor. The total volume of nitrogen used is 22 liters measured at 20◦ C and 1 bar. The nitrogen was found to contain 0.0674 g of mercury. Calculate the vapor pressure of mercury at 100◦ C.
When the same experiment is carried out with a sodium amalgam (Na+Hg) in which xNa = 0.122, 22 liters of nitrogen gas saturated with mercury was found to contain 0.0471 g of mercury. Take pure mercury as the reference state and calculate the activity a, the activity coefficient γHg, and the difference Hg in this amalgam.
