A 85 year old male (160 lbs., 6') is seen by his general practitioner for a routine checkup and reports feeling tired, weak, and mildly ill. He recently started to see a therapist at the suggestion of his wife because he was becoming increasingly depressive. This patient has also had a history of obesity, but had recently lost weight.
Health History: Two years ago, the patient's physician noted that he had impaired fasting
glucose or prediabetes. He was advised to lose weight and exercise. The patient presented in an emergency room clinic several months after his initial doctor appointment
complaining of abdominal discomfort especially after eating.
Blood Results: hyperglycemia; increased LFT (liver function tests); slightly elevated
bilirubin.
Urine Results: rusty-colored urine.
Complaints: polydipsia; polyuria; slight jaundice; edema; pruritus (itching)
