“I’m part of a team of workers dealing with a bunch of clients who are seen individually and in various kinds of groups. I work there part of the week, and so I don’t even have continuing contact with clients. Old clients leave, and an equal number of new clients come in. How am I supposed to evaluate in this threering circus?” Response to Case 2 This is another tough set of questions. Let’s look at them one at a time. The team versus individual worker contribution is difficult only if you have to sort out the two for some accountability reason. If your final outcome is the resolution of client problems, then it doesn’t matter who does it, so long at it is accomplished. But if you need to demonstrate your particular contribution to the team effort, that’s more difficult. You can look at the evaluation issue as being one of whether you supply information to others who do the major hands-on part, or whether others supply information to you for the same purpose. If you supply information primarily, then evaluate whether all of the needed information is made available to the direct-contact part of the team in time. You get a kind of batting average: required information presented in either a timely fashion or not. If you receive information from others primarily to make direct contact with the client regarding problemsolving issues, then evaluate in the conventional way whether these issues have been resolved, plus whether you had the relevant information in a timely fashion. (This is a polite way of saying evaluate as usual, but note whether everyone did his or her part. Your personal record should probably include only those situations where all of the essential information was available.) Another way of looking at this problem is to think about it in terms of applying one of the designs in this book to your piece of the problem. If you are working with a client on a particular problem, and other people in your agency are working with the client as well,
